Roy G. Biv

The past two weekends I've been working on a rainbow batt from Grafton Fibers I picked up some time ago and was saving for "someday" when I felt I could do it justice. I've decided to stop holding back "the good stuff" and just go for it. Over the weekend I finished spinning my singles and Monday I Navajo plied them into about 160 yards of sportweight-ish yarn. I'm really happy with the results and the skein has been washed and hung to dry.

Good for you for going for it with the "good stuff"! What a pretty, happy skein of yarn.

What a wonderful job you did! I'm thoroughly intimidated by Navajo plying. Bad enough that I'm taking a spinning class from Carol McFadden this weekend to actually see it done. I learned how to spin on my own, but for some reason I can't wrap my head (or my hands) around this technique.

Fun colors! I haven't been brave enough to try the chain plying technique but it looks like it'd be worth it to keep the rainbow effect. Socks?

It's beautiful. The plying really does give a polished effect

What a lovely range of colours! YOu will have to pick a pattern that really brings out its stripey goodness :-)

Just gorgeous!!
I immediatley went to Grafton Fibers to buy myself a batt like that, but couldn't find any. Maybe they've sold out?

Lovley lovley yarn, and I'm impressed by the plying too.

That's a beautiful shot of your bobbin, and some great yarn! I haven't tried chain plying with a multicolour yet, but I htink it's ridiculously fun to do even jsut with neutral roving. (Am I odd that way?) Great spinning: what will you be making with this skein?

So after the fact I discovered that spin off has a PDF of their introductory article on Navajo plying. Look for the link on the page for the spring 06 backissue here: http://www.interweave.com/spin/spinoff_magazine/back_issues/sp-06.asp
I can't quite remember where I bought that batt, I usually see her with these at Rhinebeck and other local fiber festivals and my local LYS also carries them. I haven't seen what is available on the web but perhaps if you email to ask about this one they can tell you when or if it'll be available again. I've only got 160 yards so it's too little for socks. I'm attempting a scarf and have posted progress on my blog today: http://stoneview.typepad.com/stoneview/2007/06/my_friend_roy.html
Thanks for all the lovely compliments! That sure puffs a girl up.
